About Karen and Jay and CatBird's Nest

When and Why?

In 1996 we took a vacation to Chincoteague Island and it rained the entire week, so we decided to look at houses to amuse ourselves.  When we saw this little fisherman's cottage, we fell in love and bought it.  Since we are working people, we couldn't afford to keep a cottage at the beach just for ourselves, so we decided to rent it out during the summer season and use it only in April, when we went there for spring cleaning, and October, when we closed down for the winter.

Since we are cat lovers, we decided to name the cottage CatBird's Nest, as naming cottages for rental is the custom in Chincoteague.

Some Background About Us

In 1996 when we purchased CatBird's Nest, we were working at a drug and alcohol specialty hospital in Pennsylvania --- Jay as a group therapist and Karen as a teacher/counselor.

Jay is a native of Philadelphia, and Karen was born and raised in West Virginia, but has spent the majority of her adult life in Pennsylvania.

We are both retired now, since October 2005, and reside in Elkins, West Virginia.
